Northeastern Pennsylvania has some of the nation's best hotels and most beautiful wilderness. Because of their natural beauty, the Poconos mountains have for a long time been a perfect vacation destination for people looking for a reasonably affordable vacation close to home. And why shouldn't they? The Poconos are easy to get to from most places in the northeastern US. They are conveniently located several hours from both New York and Washington D.C.. This area offers amazing scenery, a variety of outdoor activities and sufficient things for younger vacationers to engage in.

The small businesses around the Poconos region offer a number of activities that kids of various ages will have fun with. You'll find things like horseback riding, downhill skiing, rafting, swimming, biking, hiking and camping. Come to think of it, just about any outdoors activity is offered somewhere at the Poconos.

Like other parts of the nation this area has a number of resorts that cater specifically to families. They are a nice place for parents who need someone else to babysit the children for a while. If you look, you'll find some that offer some kind of scheduled activities for kids.

These resorts include the Great Wolf Lodge Poconos, which has plenty of water themed activity to please any young patron. The lodge, which is part of a nation wide chain of water parks, includes a water facility that has a water roller coaster, water slides, lazy river, wave pool and even a fort area designed specifically for younger children.

A favorite among the winter traveler is the Woodloch resort. This place, which sits on 100 acres of forest covered land, features lakeside fun in the sunny months, including a busy splash park for younger people. In the winter months, the resort features everything from snow tubing to ice skating to downhill skiing.

Once families leave their resorts, they can find numerous other activities in the Poconos geared toward kids. There are almost too many to choose from.

Do you enjoy learning about local history when you travel? If so, the Eckley Mining Village is one of the favorite and more popular places in the region. It is a living history museum that shows you what the lifestyles were like at the time when Pennsylvanians relied on the strip mining pits to fuel their local economy. The mining village offers some hands on things for patrons to do.

Is anyone in your family of Native American descent? A educational place to learn more about native Americans would be the Pocono Indian Museum. This is the only museum in the greater northeastern Pennsylvania area dedicated to presenting the history of the Delaware Indian. The museum looks back at the history of the Delaware Indian people by showing displays of ancient weapons, artifacts and tools.

Although it is very educational, some aspects of the museum can be shocking. The Pocono Indian Museum does not neglect to show the violent interaction of the Delaware Indians with white settlers. In fact, it took just 100 years or thereabouts for the new settlers to eliminate almost all traces of the Delaware Indians existence.

Frugal families searching for a relatively cheap getaway should not forget about the Poconos Mountains this summer. A trip here is always a refreshing experience. Visitors can both learn about the history of the US and take advantage of some of the most scenic outdoor views in the country all in the same place. What more can a person ask for?
