Many of the best family books have been adapted to be favorite films. Popular family books that have stood the test of time are often good candidates to make a great film, yet, when a book is made into a movie it constantly begs the question of whether the book is better or the motion picture is better and how closely does the motion picture go along the story line of the book?

A new movie adaptation from a children's book is "The Spiderwick Chronicles" by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi. There are essentially five books in the series but just the lone movie so far. The movie follows the adventure of a family as they move into a new home. The children find a eccentric ancient book that leads them to a world with elves, goblins, trolls, dwarves and other creatures. The motion picture is from 2008.

The darling kids book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl was in the beginning in print in 1964. It has been adapted into 2 famous films, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" in 1971, starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka and from 2005 "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka.

One of everybody's much loved kids books seems to be "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White. The volume was in the beginning in print in 1952 and it has never lost its esteem. It is one of the most beloved family books of all times. It was first made into an animated feature film in 1973. A living action movie account was released in December 2006. Both films followed the story of the book just about exactly.

Dr. Seuss is one of the most beloved children's writers of all time. A few of his books have been made into fantastic films. "Horton Hears a Who" came out in 2008 with Jim Carrey as the voice of Horton. This is an cartoon feature film that follows the storyline of the book nearly exactly.

"The Grinch Who Stole Christmas", another Seuss classic was made into an cartoon adaptation that showed on Television every holiday season. That version followed the book. But in the year 2000 a big budget film of "The Grinch" came out with Jim Carrey as the Grinch and there were many different scenes and events. "The Cat In The Hat", also from Seuss was released in 2003 and it too, had additional scenes and events.

One of the utmost grossing movie series of all time is from the children's books on Harry Potter authored by J.K. Rowling. At this point six of the 7 books have been made into films with a plan to make 2 movies from the seventh episode for a total of 8 films. This series is the 2nd highest grossing series in times past following James Bond.

Children's writing often makes fantastic movies that the entire family unit can take pleasure in. Reading the books all together and watching the movies together make for fantastic family amusement and wonderful reminiscences.
