There are many versions on the history of Valentine's Day. One popular version is that in ancient Roman times, February 14th was a holiday to honor Juno, the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. She was also known by the Roman people as the Goddess of women and of marriage. On the 15th of February was a celebration called the Feast of Lupercalia. In those days, young girls and boys were kept separate in their everyday lives. On the eve of this famous festival, all of the names of the girls were written on small pieces of paper and put into jars. The boys would then take turns and draw names out of the jars, and the girl they drew would become their partners for the festival and sometimes for an entire year at other important events. It is said that these young couples often fell in love and later become husband and wife.

Claudius believed that single men made better soldiers because they were not distracted by thoughts of love and would not allow members of his army to marry. Some say that Valentine was an imprisoned man who had fallen deeply in love with the daughter of the jailor.
