When it comes to choosing the right fishing rod, a lot of people get in to some serious trouble. This trouble is partly their own fault and partly the guys at the fishing stores fault.

To get the fishing rod that is right for you is extremely important. With the choices you have today, you will be dead in the water if you don't have any knowledge of the rods before you go to the store. Remember that it is only your own experience that will suffer if you do the wrong choice.

Be sure to know what casting weight you are looking for when buying a rod. It limits your options considerably and gives you a much easier job. This is the most important thing about a rod.

It is important for two reasons. The first one is because you dont want to have a rod that is meant for heavy lures when you are only fishing with small lures this will give you extremely short distance on your casting.

If you on the other hand buys a rod that is meant for light lures and you are fishing with salmon lures, you will run the risk of breaking the rod when casting. You will also have trouble reeling in the fish that you actually catch. The rod might even break when you catch a fish with your lure.

A system that is often used is to classify the different kinds of rods. Usually the casting weight is printed on the rod itself. The first class of rods is the ultra light rods. As you probably understand, these rods are meant for very light fishing.

If we move on up the ladder, we will find light action rods, medium action rods and medium to heavy action rods. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses which makes them perfect for their own type of fishing.

On the top of the ladder we find the heavy action rods. These are the real big guns of rods. With these rods you will be trying to catch the biggest salmon and species that will grow even bigger.
