There has been an overriding image that is often associated with anime. It is that anime is something that only mostly nerds are fond of. Despite facts that show otherwise, there is a continued misconception that carries such opinions with the masses.
There are fans and non-fans who will disagree with such a conclusion. While some might feel that fans would naturally oppose negative opinions of their passion and interests, they do provide convincing evidence that prove that the general public is wrong.
Firstly, anime is no different from movies, books, television programs or even music. They are all basically for entertainment. Unfortunately, anime is also considered to be nothing more than cartoons, something that childrens love. Yet, we need to look beyond this, at the fact that anime plots do feature more grown up concerns.
Fans who love anime are also just like fans of other hobbies. For example, sports fans also support their teams and collect memorabilia fervently, similar to what anime fans do for their passion. If such display of passion classifies them as nerds, then sports fans are no different by definition.
As mentioned, there are various sub-genres within the anime world. They include science fiction, thrillers, action, war, fantasy, romance and many more. Such subjects are handled in other media as well from books to movies.
The anime industry is a huge and growing one. But in order to enjoy such a thriving business environment, you need people who have acumen and the right experience. They also have a passion for anime, and believe me, no one would think that any of them are nerds who stay home and watch kiddy cartoons.
Nobody can prevent anybody from having an opinion of their own, even if it is that of anime fans being nerds. It generally speaks of narrow-mindedness and is more common than one thinks. President Obama spent a large part of his career as a professor, but did that mean that he was a nerd who spent most of his time with books?
To the credit of anime fans, they generally ignore such misconceptions. They are passionate about their art and are always willing to share what they enjoy with others. Finding happiness and joy in what they do is ultimately more important than trying to change people's opinions.
