The Gold Coast beaches are famous for clean, warm, blue water as well as many activities such as fishing, swimming, scuba diving and surfing. The endless golden sand is great for a romantic stroll at sunset as well. There are 21 patrolled beaches there and the most popular are Main Beach, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, and Mermaid Beach.
Main Beach was the main surfing beach in the town of Southport. Southport was the first official town in this area. It sits on the eastern side of the Nerang River Estuary and to the south of the Spit and north of Surfers. There is a beach trail for walking or biking which extends from Surfers to Main Beach as well as many restaurants and cafes for outdoor dining. The bath house pavillion on Main beach is an historic location and also offers light snacks and refreshments.
Surfers Paradise was renamed in the 1920's from it's original name of Elston. This is a very busy beach, however it's popularity does not detract from it's natural beauty. There are many beachfront souvenir markets and restaurants nearby. On this amazing beach you can enjou surfing, volleyball or swimming along with many other beachgiong activities.
Broadbeach:Broadbeach was named in 1934 when a new subdivision was surveyed for the area. There are some beautiful parks along the foreshore of this long stretch of beach. The parks are well equipped with sheltered picnic areas, simple BBQs and play areas for children. The surfing is consistent at Broadbeachand there are lovely ocean walks to take along the paths plus beach markets at Kurrawa Park.
Mermaid Beach was named in 1946. This is a much quieter beach that Broadbeach or Surfers. This beach is great for families because it offers covered picnic pavilions, playgrounds, bike trails and virtually no surf.
