The Granite Belt is focused around the Central business district of Stanthorpe Shire and spreads more than 37km bordered by the picturesque Girraween and Sundown National Parks south west of Brisbane. It enjoys a cooler drier climate than much of South East Queensland due to its elevation of 1000m above sea level and therefore the Vineyards reap the rewards of both a cold winter and a warm sunny summer making it a perfect place to discover fantastic wineries. The Granite Belt produces white wine equal to any other Australian cold climate region and yet has enough sun to ripen red grapes to produce unique wines rich in flavour.
Wine is not the only thing the Belt is known for. The Belt has a history in fruit and vegetable growing which, today is a major part of the economy. Because of this there are a variety of gourmet foods to try, in the numerous restaurants in the area.
If you are driving then follow the signs for Granite Belt Drive from Dalvern. The first place you will come across is the Heritage Estate .This is a family owned vineyard and winery producing a wide variety of award winning wines and fortifier's.It has a large atmospheric cellar door facility, a log fire, a cafe offering light meals .The next winery would be Stanthorpe Wine Centre .This is slightly bigger, offering Award winning wines, wine education, an Art gallery, a cafe, accommodation and local produce and souvenirs. You are also invited to walk through the vineyards.
Moving on is the Old Caves Winery, whose philosophy is - A good wine is one you can drink and enjoy. Then to Stanthorpe, to visit the Quart Pot Bakehouse. next is the most famous of vineyards, Ballandean Estate, which was developed by the Puglisi family and the Robinson's Family Vineyards.
Accommodation can be whatever you desire. The Granite Belt offers anything from a unique experience at a Bed and Breakfast House, a serviced Motel to five star luxury cottages complete with attentive staff to pamper you. Also at Stanthorpe there are numerous well established caravan parks and backpacker facilities so there's no excuse to drink and drive!!
