Shoveling snow may seem like a simple chore to an observer, but really, there is nothing can be farther from the cold, hard truth. Shoveling snow is really a complicated and difficult task, but is a necessary one for the home upkeep in cold weather. Doing it without preparation can end in disaster.

We must first try to identify the problems that could be associated with shoveling snow, as it is with all things that require thorough thought. Based on what I've been through, shoveling can be a real pain to one's back. We must also consider that air stretches thin as the temperature drops, so we might not be able to breathe right when we are working. If we're not careful, the combination of factors might end up in cardiac arrest in the middle of shoveling.

What is the best way to deal with these possible health issues? Being careful is one of the best ways, but even then, working in a wet and cold area can be deadly. Just remember to keep certain things in mind, and you are able to reduce the chances of an accident by a significant amount:

1) Exercise a bit and do warm-ups before starting to shovel snow. You won't suffer from sudden heart spasms if your blood is all warmed up and ready beforehand. Jogging a few blocks will work just fine for this.

2) Be conscious of your back while shoveling. You can't help but lean over when you scoop up snow; but if you keep your back straight even then, your spine won't receive the stress brought upon by the heavy weight.

3) Always be on the lookout for new and improved snow shovels. Some of the newer models are designed with the above mentioned concerns in mind, and they aim to reduce the damages done by shoveling snow to our health. Those that do the job efficiently while keeping our back safe is the best snow shovels for the job.
