Coolangatta is a city in the southern part of Gold Coast Australia, very close to the border between Queensland and New South Wales. The airport of Gold Coast is situated here. You can fly to the Great Barrier Reef in the south and come back within a day. The beaches in the northern side of Coolangatta, Rainbow Bay and Greenmount are famous as surfing and swimming beaches, apart from Duranbah and Snapper Rocks, also known as Flagstaff Beach. Anglers who like to fish enjoy Coolangatta for the bream, tailor and snapper available in plenty in the Coolangatta beaches.

The first documented person to visit Coolangatta was Captain Cook who is believed to have visited the area when he was charting the Australian coast in 1770. Captain Cook named the areas around Coolangatta as Point Danger and Mount Warning. The Tweed River developed into a significant port area around 1830 when cedar wood was shipped from there. Visitors to Coolangatta date back to the 1880s and the twin towns of Coolangatta and Tweed Heads were founded around 1883.

Located halfway between Coolangatta and Rainbow Bay is Greenmount which is the town of the first surf life saving club established in Gold Coast Australia in Queensland in 1909. Coolangatta as a Gold Coast holiday destination goes beyond just a swimming, beaches and surfing holiday resort location but is also a great family holiday destination for watching the annual migration of humpback whales from observation points at Point Danger. Visitors can also see dolphins and a myriad of birdlife from these locations. For those with a taste for the other side of our planet, there are also good scuba diving opportunities around Kirra and Cook Island.

Coolangatta is also well known for its regular markets, restaurants, cafes and shopping. There is also a number of annual and special one off festivals in Coolangatta including the Wintersun rock 'n' roll festival each June and the September beachside A La Carte food feast which all make for a great experience during your Gold Coast holidays. There are also cross border celebrations each New Years Eve with fireworks on both the New South Wales and Queensland sides of the border. The Captain Cook lighthouse is a great local attraction and a significant point of interest for all tourists and visitors.
