Germany is a massive country in more ways than one. Ok, it's not as big as the United States or Australia in physical size but it still ranks alongside them for things to do. You see Germany has a long history. Even though the country that we now call Germany has not existed in it's present state, plenty of the regions have existed for well over a 1000 years. So if you plan to vacation in Germany, you won't be spoiled for things to do.
Your first thoughts about things to do in Germany might be to stop off in Munich for the beer festival. That's not a bad call as it's a unique experience that you probably won't get anywhere else in the world. Sure, many countries have fastened onto the idea of having their own beer festivals but Munich is the true original and it has a atmosphere all of it's own.
You will soon be mixing with some very happy and noisy Germans. I wonder why ? I'd suggest it's the huge quantity of beer that is drunk in no time at all. With this said it's more about the way it is consumed than anything else.
You have to pay to get into the festival grounds which consists of many large halls and tents. There seems to be three important parts of each hall or tent. The first is a never ending, conveyor belt of beers, the second is rustic music from a lederhosen clad band and the third is many large tables with benches. Strangers sit together on benches and tables in a communal setting. My experience is that you soon make friends. And due to the world famous nature of the festival you will meet many people from all over the world including one or two from your own country too.
At the height of the festival there are so many people that you have to get to your favorite hall or tent early on. If you don't get in early, say mid morning, you may not get a place on a table and have to sit outside (which is not bad when the weather is good). After that it's time for some heavy duty drinking and a bit of food thrown into the mixer. Must try food has to be the sausages " ordinary or white sausages (cheese). Ok, it's not haute cuisine but it goes down a treat with beer. You can also get those foods that Germany is famous for like pretzels and sauerkraut (which may be an acquired taste).
There are some great sights to be seen in Germany, one of which has to be the beer festival in Munich. It's known as Oktoberfest but it starts late in September and runs through to the beginning of October. If you plan to be in Munich around that time, then a day of gernal hilarit and beer drinking is a must do. And don't think that Munich is a one trick pony, there is much more to see and do in the Bavarian capital.
