Florida has very tropical waters all year round, especially in the south, which makes it one the best places in the world to saltwater fish. Some of the main attractions to anglers in Florida are the Keys and the Everglades.

The best thing about saltwater fishing in Florida is the amount of great game fish there are to be caught. Some of the popular inshore fish are snook, redfish, trout, mullet, sheepshead, bonefish and small sharks. Offshore favorites consist of mahi mahi, tarpon, marlin, swordfish, mackerel, grouper and snapper.

If you are looking for a great meal and a great fight you can go after snook, which are found in warm waters inshore. From the middle of Florida down to the keys are the best places to fish for snook, they can be found on both coasts of Florida. You will need a saltwater fishing license with a snook stamp to catch one, and they must be in season also.

When it comes to offshore fishing the dolphin fish is a favorite for lots of anglers. They are also known as Mahi Mahi, and they are caught miles offshore by trolling. They can get up to fifty pounds, sometimes over if you travel further offshore, they make a very good dinner and there is no closed season for them.

Another great tasting fish are snapper, which can be caught offshore and inshore. There are various types of snapper but the one thing that they all have in common is they love to hang around rocky structures. They can be a light as a pound up to over a hundred pounds.

If you are flats fishing and want a fish that will give you a fight you can try to go for some bonefish. For their weight they will fight harder than any saltwater fish there are, you will need some experience under your belt to land one of these, as they can strip a 100 yards of line off your reel in the matter of seconds.

If you have access to a dock, then you could try and catch some sheepshead. Sheepshead are known as bait thieves, and have black and white vertical stripes, they are excellent to eat. They love to hang around barnacles, so piers, docks and mangroves are excellent spots to find some sheepshead.

Know that you know some of the popular game fish there are in Florida know you can decide what type of fish to go after. I would learn how to fish inshore good before going offshore, offshore fishing requires heavier and more expensive tackle than inshore fishing, and they are harder to find offshore also.

If you do not have a boat nor have the money to buy the tackle necessary for offshore fishing you can always hire a fishing charter. They are everywhere around Florida and often will supply the bait and tackle that is necessary to land the big fish. Make sure if you do this to get an experienced captain that has a good reputation.
