It can be a question that catches you off guard. Do you have a motorcycle helmet that will protect you? If you've done your research, and bought an expensive helmet, you probably think you do.

There is a question about what is the best type of helmet material to protect you in a crash. For most of us, the first answer would be a strong motorcycle helmet, to prevent breakage or injury.

This might not actually be true, however. If you have a strong motorcycle helmet which is too stiff, it will be unable to protect you fully from brain injury in the most common types of crashes.

However, if a helmet is too soft, it will also be unable to protect you if you are in an especially violent crash. So what type of helmet gives you the best type of protection then?

Your helmet is designed to prevent you from a brain injury. In a collision, one of the most dangerous things that can happen to you is to have your brain hit the side of your skull, causing serious damage.

You have two different layers to your motorcycle helmet. The hard outer layer is designed to help prevent breech of the inner section, which has shock absorbing layers to protect your brain.

A strong motorcycle helmet is still a good buy, you just need to ensure that it is the right balance in order to protect you. Any good helmet will be strong enough to protect the shock absorbing layers.

When you are buying a strong motorcycle helmet, make sure to buy smart. The best way to ensure your safety is to buy a helmet with DOT or Snell certification, which proves the helmet meets certain safety levels.
