Many believe that the history of this holiday that is celebrated on February 14th every year is based on the story of early Roman times. A man named Valentine was a clergyman and that the ruler at the time was a fellow called Claudius II, an emperor, who was ruling Rome.
Claudius had a strong belief that unmarried men made much better soldiers because they were more focused and because of this, he strictly prohibited members of his army from marrying. It is said that Valentine did not believe this and performed secret marriages for the young couples in spite of the emperor's orders. Another popular version is that Saint Valentine was an imprisoned man who had fallen deeply in love with the daughter of the jailor who held him. Just before he was to be put to death, he had written a love letter to the jailor's daughter, proclaiming his love for her and signed the letter 'from your Valentine'. This very same wording is used in Valentine's Day cards, gifts and embossed on candy as a symbol of the day.
So, as you can see, there is more than one theory as to what is the real meaning behind this day set aside to celebrate love. No matter what you may believe as to the origins of Valentine's Day, no one can argue the fact that it is a day to shower the people you love with symbols of your devotion.
We all know that Valentine's Day is marked by the exchange of candy, flowers, gifts, jewelry and other gestures to celebrate our love for one another. Today this holiday is very much commercialized with stores full of heart-shaped gifts, candies of all types, Valentine-themed toys, clothing, perfume and collectibles.
Many young men wish to surprise the women that they love by purchasing expensive gifts such as diamond rings, large stuffed animals, beautiful bouquets of flowers or even a romantic dinner in a fine restaurant. Valentine's Day is also a day that many men choose to propose marriage to their sweethearts because it is considered 'the day of love'. Many couples want to be sure to remember this special day by taking pictures for Valentine's Day so that the memories can live on for years.
Many couples also pick the 14th day of February as the day to marry. What a better day to exchange vows with the person you love than on Valentine's Day?
Regardless of how people choose to celebrate this day of love, there is no doubt that Valentine day pictures are in most couple's photo albums. It is a day for sweethearts and sweets, and a very popular day to show your lover just how much he or she is adored.
