Claudius had a strong belief that unmarried men made much better soldiers because they were more focused and because of this, he strictly prohibited members of his army from marrying. It is said that Valentine did not believe this and performed secret marriages for the young couples in spite of the emperor's orders. Another popular version is that Saint Valentine was an imprisoned man who had fallen deeply in love with the daughter of the jailor who held him. Just before he was to be put to death, he had written a love letter to the jailor's daughter, proclaiming his love for her and signed the letter 'from your Valentine'. This very same wording is used in Valentine's Day cards, gifts and embossed on candy as a symbol of the day.
So, as you can see, there is more than one theory as to what is the real meaning behind this day set aside to celebrate love. No matter what you may believe as to the origins of Valentine's Day, no one can argue the fact that it is a day to shower the people you love with symbols of your devotion.
