From the time Man was able to figure out that there were creatures living in the waters around him, and that they could be eaten and not kill him, and they tasted pretty good in the process; bass fish have become a staple in the sports fishing world. Bass species are found all over the world in one form or another, and are pursued not only for the wonderful sport fish that they are, but for the good eating they can afford as well.

The word "bass" comes down to us from the Middle English word "bars" which literally in olden times meant "perch". The scientific name of the order that the bass fish belong to is Perciformes translated means "perch-like" fish; and the members of this order are divided into two main divisions of freshwater and marine fish depending on which type of water they prefer. They will quite often be found swimming in groups and that group terminology is called a shoal.

There are two main types of bass fish found in the scientifically named family of Moronidae, and these are the temperate basses and the black basses. Upon further breakdown, the group of black bass contains the largemouth, small mouth, Guadalupe, and spotted bass; and then the temperate group of bass would be the striped bass and the white bass. The included varieties can be found in numerous sites containing water such as small streams, ponds, lakes, and upwards of the ocean as well.

These are not the only species that are referred to by anglers from all over as bass fish. The primary species that are called bass are the black sea bass, the giant sea bass, and the Australian bass; and when you look deeper into what people are calling bass, there are lots of other types of fish that fall under this category as well and are known by similar names.

Bass fishing is the most popular game fishing sport without a doubt, and there are legions of anglers who would attest to that. A whole industry has built up around the bass fish, and there are hundreds upon hundreds of online websites where you can go to get any bit of information you want about the world of bass fishing or join a forum to talk with other bass fishermen; as well as specialty sports stores that specialize in the sport. There are all kinds of boats designed just for bass fishing, lures, equipment, recreational lodges built near bodies of water that support bass---the list is endless.

Boats are a main component in bass fishing, and depending on your tastes and your wallet there is a bass boat for you. The average sized bass boat is found in the range of 16 to 26feet, and is made up of aluminum or fiberglass and you must have an electric trolling motor on the bow; this is required by law. The types of boats are hundreds and include electric boats, flat boats, jon boats---all kinds of boats that would be used for chasing the elusive bass fish.

The sport of bass fishing is loved by many the world over and for very good reason; because the enjoyment of pursuing the bass fish is exciting in many ways. When you are totally outfitted and have a great little boat that you can park yourself on and just relax for the day on a remote lake or pond; or conversely are having the time of your life hooking and working a fighting bass fish on the end of the line----the fun is never ending and reaffirms the fact for you loud and clear just how much bass fishing is loved by the fishing world.
