There are people who love what they do and dedicate their lives to it, no matter what happens. Professional surfers are like this. I've always admired this commitment. Then there are those like me, people who know where they want to be, but realize they cannot drop everything, they need to work to earn the lifestyle they want. I've done it though, I wheeled and dealed and here I've made it. Sea-change at last.
My sea change took me to the Gold Coast on Australia's North East. From my desk I can hear the waves crashing on the shore. For some reason, I am here at my desk though, writing this article instead of enjoying the waves. Why is that? It is Thursday already and I have not been for a surf once this week?
I know the answer, sometimes I just do not like to admit it to myself, but life is about balance. I need to do everything to bring the level of variety into my life that will keep me sane. Just as 15 hour days in the office would drive me mental, so would 15 hours in the surf everyday. Sure, I would become a damn good surfer, but the cost would be my love for the ocean and my sanity.
Humanity is about development. We all try to improve ourselves as individuals and also as a community. Intellectual development is part of that. Our intellect is as important a part of us as any other part of us and needs to be exercised as well. This is why I type, I am ensuring I do not get bored of mind because that has the power to permeate into the rest of our lives.
Tomorrow is another day. Tomorrow I will go for a surf. That will satisfy a hunger of a different kind.
Emotions are an important part of us too and should be exercised like our intellect. I find the best place to do this is in the development of relationships. My first child, a daughter, taught me so much about myself in this regard. As a parent, nothing is sacred. You need to be open to giving away everything, including ideas and opinions. It is in this selfless giving that I mature emotionally.
It is interesting witnessing the hunger for emotional growth in people who have not experienced it. It usually manifests in a more and more extreme search for a boundary. I am sure you have witnessed behavior like this.
We have our spirituality too though, a part of being human which so many people just forget about. When you forget to flex you "spiritual muscle" you develop a sense that there has got to be more meaning in life. This is the hunger for spiritual development. People develop spiritual awareness differently, surfing is a big part of my development here, but so is some degree of meditation.
As humans we strive to learn and improve, but to do so in balance. Our intellect, emotions, physical attributes and spirit all need development. Ignoring any of these needs creates a specific hunger which if not satisfied, creates unhappiness. Learn to recognize your hungers for what they are. Taking action on these hungers will lead to a happier life. Good luck
